January 2010

"Living and Loving a Gluten Free Diet"
  3345 Duke Street, Alexandria.
  Cost: $20, or 2 people for $35
  Pre-registration is required. (571) 271-8742.

Taught by CFSupport member, Cheryl

From Cheryl, "Many people with FM or CFS report much less joint pain or fatigue when they avoid gluten. One of my clients put it best when she said that FM was like alway carrying around a sack of bricks, and when she avoided gluten, there were fewer bricks to carry around.  Gluten is inflammatory for everyone, but when all systems are functioning normally, often it's subtle we don't notice.  About 1% of people have Celiac Disease, but somewhere between 10-30% are gluten intolerant, which pretty much means that there's no good way to test for it, but people feel better when avoiding gluten. Often people with FM/CFS who already have fatigue, inflammation, etc. find that gluten can be a big irritant and lead to more joint pain, depression, muscle aches, brain fog and general feelings of, well, "full body blahs".

My Glueten Free Diet videos at kaplanclinic.com are a great introduction into why and how eating gluten free  may well make you feel better.

Class covers:

  * Celiac disease, gluten sensitivity and the importance of testing
  * All you ever wanted to know about label reading
  * Foods to avoid, cross contamination and hidden gluten
  * Sorting out the facts from common myths
  * Where to get support-local and online groups, websites, books

Catie D. is a junior at a college in VA. She is majoring in Exercise and Health Sciences and doing research over the summer of 2010 for her degree.

Her research project will look at those with varying degrees of fibromyalgia (FMS) and testing them for joint hypermobility syndrome (JHS) to see if there is any correlation between FMS and JHS.

She and licensed physical therapist, Secili DeStefano, will be administering questionnaires (includes medical history, the Fibromyalgia Impact Questionnaire (FIQ), and a Symptoms Intensity (SI)) to measure pain levels and functionality. They will also administer the Beighton/Brighton Score that will measure the amount of hypermobility in each participant.  The Beighton score is administered by asking the patient to perform simple movements (ex. extending their arm to show if there is any hyperextension).

Participants between ages 20 and 60 who are believed to have FMS who have signs/symptoms of FMS are needed.

In addition to a consent form for general participation, permission must also be given for PHOTOGRAPHS to be taken, though no photographs of faces will be included.

Excluded from participation are those who have had wrist surgery/carpals tunnel syndrome, pregnant/postpartum women, and those with lower back surgery/fusion of the vertebrae in the lumbar region.

Please contact the researchers for further information:

Celiac Disease and Thyroid Disorders"

   More info:

Did you know that people with Thyroid Disorders have a much higher chance of developing Celiac Disease than those without Thyroid Disease?  Recent medical research shows that the reverse is also true -- people with Celiac are much more likely to have issues with their thyroid.

Both illnesses can be difficult to diagnose, but too often, even when patient is correctly diagnosed with one of these conditions, the other is overlooked. Why?  Because the diseases have so many symptoms in common (e.g., fatigue, depression, constipation or diarrhea, and weight gain or loss).

Unfortunately, this means that a patient with Celiac Disease who is being treated for their gluten intolerance might continue to suffer from many painful symptoms because his or her undiagnosed Autoimmune Thyroid Disorder remains untreated.
