    “Mechanisms and Management of Overlapping Chronic Pain and Associated Conditions.” 

    It will include presentations and discussions of three topic areas: (1) neurological mechanisms that may contribute to comorbid pain conditions, (2) psychosocial factors that may contribute to comorbid pain conditions, and (3) treatment strategies and obstacles to managing overlapping pain conditions. The presenters will be NIH-funded investigators who have made significant contributions to advancing the field of pain research.

Photo ID req'd. Open to the public. Pre-registration required for public testimony by April 18, 2011. Register with Dr. Wanda K. Jones, Executive Secretary, by  e-mailing cfsac@hhs.gov. Public comments will be limited to five minutes per speaker. No execptions. 

You do not have to appear in person. You can send in written testimony (limit 5 pages). You can read it over the phone. If you wish to be identified, ensure that all written testimony includes only your name and does not include personal contact information.     Speaker for Lyme Awareness Month
    Award winning Roanoke Times journalist Beth Macy


    Beth, a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University from 2009-10, recently
    wrote a three part series on Lyme disease that appeared in the Roanoke
    Times, December 2010. Macy, a families and beat reporter has been a
    features writer at the Roanoke Times since 1989.

    Her hard-hitting stories detailing real life struggles that touch
    average lives have attracted national attention winning features
    writing awards and Virginia Press Association honors. Her freelance
    publishing credits include Salon.com, The Christian Science Monitor,
    Best Newspaper Writing for 2007-08, The Chronicle of Higher Education,
    besides other numerous publications. She has taught literary
    journalism at Hollins University.

    Her stories range from the devastation caused by Lyme disease, the
    plight of Raleigh Court Somali Bantus Roanoke immigrants, the long
    term health care crisis winning her, and her team a 2009 Casey Medal
    for her part in the Multimedia category for “Age of Uncertainty,”
    chronicling the Star City’s aging population.  Macy’s hard hitting
    first person gritty coverage of the Dart Society funded Angel Missions
    Haiti trip gave readers a bird’s eye view of the devastation rocking that island nation.

"Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndrome with Dr. Enlander"

Dr. Derek Enlander is an internist who has a special interest in Fibromyalgia and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME, often referred to as chronic fatigue syndrome). He is presently in private practice in New York City, and is on the faculty of the Mount Sinai Medical School, in addition to serving as as President of the Israel Medical Foundation.

Dr. Enlander will discuss the Xenotropic murine leukemia virus-related virus (XMRV) and his current treatment plans, including Hepapressin, an amino acid complex, as well as immunotherapy with Ampligen and Gc protein-derived macrophage activating factor (Gcmaf).

The venue is accessible by Metro (free circulator bus from Bethesda Metro) and by bus (Ride-On number 34).

The meeting will be recorded and archived for on-demand viewing through the CFSAC web site. It will be available by audio on both days and the call-in numbers will be posted on the CFSAC Web site. Public attendance at the meeting is open. Those attending will need to sign-in prior to entering (bring ID). Members of the public will have the opportunity to provide oral testimony on both days of the meeting; pre-registration for oral testimony is required by Wednesday, October 26, 2011.

Time slots for public comment will be available on a first-come, first-served basis and will be limited to five minutes per speaker; no exceptions will be made. Priority will be given to individuals who have not presented public comment at previous CFSAC meetings.
